Having sold off its power tool and life science equipment division, Hitachi Koki Co., Ltd., to US private equity firm KKR & Co for US$1.3 billion in the first quarter of this year, Hitachi Koki is now rebranding itself under a new identity by combining the two words to form HiKOKI (pronounced "hai-koh-key") which will take effect from October 2018.

As we've mentioned in our previous blog, Hitachi Koki's former parent company, Hitachi Limited, is one of those highly-diversified Japanese congolmerate that makes everything from aircraft to air-conditioning and everything in-between. The problem with being too diversified is that you tend to lose focus.

Despite that, we have seen and tested some rather interesting tools from Hitachi Koki. The name change has been reflected worldwide with Hitachi Power Tools (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd confirming the brand name from HITACHI to HiKOKI starting October next year.

The company hinted that they will be moving forward with new technology and many more exciting products in their line up so we see this as an overall positive move not just for the brand but for the whole hardware industry. Additionally, Hitachi Malaysia also ensured us that the spare parts and service centres will not be affected by the exercise.

Whether it be 'HITACHI' or 'HiKOKI', we feel both are nice-sounding names - however if it does bother you, here's your excuse to grab that Hitachi power tool before the name change takes effect. You can read more of the news release at PRNewswire.
